Até recentemente era Secretário académico da Associação Britânica de Investigação Educacional e tem sido Professorial Research Fellow, School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University; a Research Fellow, Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh and a Professor of Education, School of Education, University of Birmingham.

É o editor do European Educational Research Journal, official Journal of the European Educational Research Association.
